Dr. Sharon Shrensel holds a Bachelors Degree from Temple University ,1969, a Master's Degree from Boston University, 1970, and a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, 1977.
Dr. Shrensel is a licensed psychologist and psychotherapist. She is certified as a medical psychotherapist and psychoanalyst as well. She holds a Member-faculty position at the Institute of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy of NJ, as well as holding a Field Supervisory position at Rutgers University Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology.
She is one of the Founders of the NJ Coalition for Mental Health Professionals and Consumers, Past President of the American Mental Health Alliance-NJ, Past President of the American Mental Health Alliance-USA (a national network of therapists whose ethical philosophy is to protect privacy, freedom of choice, confidentiality, and patient rights) and remains a strong patient advocate in the professional community.
Dr. Shrensel has a family practice with over twenty five years of clinical private practice experience, assisting those making life pattern changes in their relationships, in marriage, in their work environment, in their management of stress, depression, anxiety, and interpersonal communication.
In addition, Dr. Shrensel has expertise in treating eating disorders, physical symptoms related to life stressors and loss, as well as providing supportive therapy for people with physical or chronic illness.
She is a member of the American Psychological Association. She has a Certificate in Psychoanalysis from the Institute of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy of NJ, received in 1996. Her work experience includes Behavioral Medicine, as Asst. Director of Intervention, University of Medicine and Dentistry Dept. of Psychiatry, Newark, NJ where she supervised counselors and nutritionists in behavioral medicine and treated patients at high risk for heart disease. She has published articles on patient compliance in the medical environment, and done numerous workshops on a variety of topics. She has also been an adjunct professor of psychology at Seton Hall University.
